Your Face Is, or Will Be, Your Boarding Pass (The New York Times, Dec 07, 2021)

If it’s been a year or more since you traveled, particularly internationally, you may notice something different at airports in the United States: More steps — from checking a bag to clearing customs — are being automated using biometrics. Biometrics are unique individual traits, such as fingerprints, that can be used to automate and verify identity. They promise both more security and efficiency in moving travelers through an airport where, at steps from check-in to boarding, passengers are normally required to show government-issued photo identification.

“The technologies have gotten much more sophisticated and the accuracy rate much higher,” said Robert Tappan, the managing director for the trade group International Biometrics + Identity Association, who called the impetus to ease crowds and reduce contact through these instruments “COVID-accelerated.”

City Council Shoots Down Effort to Override Veto of Facial Recognition Technology Ban (WBAA, Dec 07, 2021)

The West Lafayette City Council on Monday overwhelmingly shot down an attempt to override a mayoral veto of an ordinance banning the use of facial recognition technology. In November, the city council passed the ban -- which was promptly vetoed by Mayor John Dennis, who cited the technology’s use as an important tool of law enforcement. Facial recognition technology uses computer programs to compare individuals caught on video or camera to a database of faces. Privacy advocates say databases of photos can include pictures taken from social media without a person's knowledge or consent.

Idemia to Launch Biometric Travel Platform in North America (Airport Technology, Dec 07, 2021)

Identity security and authentication solutions provider Idemia is set to roll out the travel solution ID2Travel in North America to enable ‘frictionless’ journeys. ID2Travel is said to be the sole ‘interoperable’ traveller identity platform that can support the complete passenger facilitation ecosystem. This capability is built on identity management and biometric identification. It can be incorporated as part of the airport, airline or through Idemia’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-rated biometric capture technologies. The solution utilises identity proofing, enabling mobile enrolment with digital credentials on a passenger’s mobile device, biometric devices and technology back-end services.

New Tracker: Digital Identity Making Unattended Retail Safer for Underaged Consumers (PYMNTS, Dec 07, 2021)

Remote onboarding and identity verification continue mushrooming through the phases of the pandemic and with all that convenience come key legal issues that must be quickly resolved. Unattended retail (UR) checkouts and automated kiosks are two gleaming expressions of the digital shift, and as the product mix available from unattended retail technology becomes more exotic, tasks like accurate age verification are emerging as a new focal point in digital identity. According to PYMNTS’ new Digital Identity Tracker® a Jumio collaboration, “These self-service machines lack human staff to verify customers’ identities and must do it themselves, especially when it comes to age-restricted items such as tobacco, alcohol or cannabis.”

White House Seeks to Develop AI Bill of Rights and Calls for Feedback on Use of Biometric Data (Solutions Review, Dec 07, 2021)
White House officials have signaled that they are developing a potential consumer “Bill of Rights” for artificial intelligence (AI), and are broadly seeking information on biometric-based AI technologies. In particular, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has issued a public request for information on the use of biometric technologies, which will help guide the development of a set of principles around the use of AI-enabled biometric tech. OSTP also has been holding listening sessions and panels to engage stakeholders on biometric and other AI-related issues.
