There was concern among mostly conservative lawmakers about the collection and use of biometric data when creating a REAL ID-compliant license. Biometric data, in this case, means the digitized storage of facial features and fingerprints. There is no federal database of REAL ID biometric data; it's kept at the state level.

Microsoft Makes All New Accounts Passwordless As of May 1, Pushes Biometric Passkeys

Users are given a choice of passwordless options upon creating a new account, but will then be prompted to enroll a passkey. The passkeys are stored cryptographically on user devices and are accessed via either biometric facial recognition, fingerprints or a PIN.
