SFPD Skirted Facial-Recognition Ban, Lawsuit Says. Hundreds of Cases Could Be in Jeopardy (The San Francisco Standard, Jul 18, 2024)
The records, cited in a lawsuit brought this week against the city by Secure Justice, a nonprofit that aims to fight government overreach, show that at least six more cops flouted the ban at least seven other times by asking neighboring agencies to use the technology for them. “The SFPD officers were so bold as to title their email solicitations ‘Facial Recognition,’ and to openly state their intent to solicit the use of [facial-recognition technology] from third parties in their chronology reports,” according to the lawsuit, which includes screenshots of some of the correspondence.

London District Calls on Police to Stop Live Facial Recognition Use (Biometric Update, Jul 17, 2024)
The Council says that facial recognition is intrusive, unreliable and has the potential to be used disproportionately against Black, Asian and ethnic communities. It also cites figures from a 2018 study on gender classification disparity showing an error rate of up to 35 percent for identifying black women. The technology has been used twice so far in Islington, both during 2023, the Council says.

Online gaming platform ARB Gaming LLC violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act when it collected, retained, and disclosed thousands of its users’ face templates to third-parties, a proposed class action says. To play games and receive winnings on the platform, users of ARB Gaming, which does business as Modo.US, need to upload their government identification card along with a selfie, according to the complaint filed Wednesday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
