Companies that fail to secure written permission before collecting fingerprints, face scans, and other data from Illinois residents would see damages limited under proposed changes to the state’s biometric privacy law. The Illinois Senate passed Thursday the measure (S.B. 2979) that would curb potential fines under the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act, or BIPA, which allows individuals to sue over such violations. The law has sparked class actions and notable settlements, such as a recent agreement by BNSF Railway Co. to pay $75 million in a case alleging employee privacy rights violations. UK Government Rejects Calls for Clearer Facial Recognition Laws (Biometric Update, Apr 12, 2024)
Debates continue among British lawmakers on the legality of police deployment of live facial recognition. After the UK Parliament’s Justice and Home Affairs Committee (JHAC) questioned the legal basis of UK police use of the technology and recommended the establishment of a new legislative framework, the government responded with the familiar argument – the use of live facial recognition is already covered by existing laws.

Based on Facial Recognition Technology (FRT), Digi Yatra provides for contactless, seamless movement of passengers at various check points at airports and currently, there are nearly 5 million users. The facility is now there at 14 airports for domestic passengers and discussions are ongoing with various stakeholders concerned to make it available for international travellers as well.
