DOD OIG Releases Evaluation of Pentagon’s Control Over Biometric Devices (ExecutiveGov, Nov 13, 2023)
The report revealed that military services and combatant commands complied with DOD policy and their guidance and procedures for biometric devices but found that some devices could not encrypt data because the DOD does not specify information security standards or require encryption on the biometric technologies, the DOD OIG said Thursday.

Wiley’s update on recent developments and what’s next in consumer protection at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC announced that it will hold a virtual Open Commission Meeting on November 16 at 11 a.m. ET. The Open Commission Meeting has two agenda items: (1) a Voice Cloning Challenge announcement; and (2) a presentation on public comments regarding the business practices of cloud computing providers. According to the agenda, the Voice Cloning Challenge will “encourage the development of multidisciplinary solutions – from products to procedures – aimed at protecting consumers from artificial intelligence [(‘AI’)]-enabled voice cloning harms, such as fraud and the broader misuse of biometric data and creative content.”

Member States are opposing a full ban on the use of remote biometrics ID systems in public; no agreement on registering the use of high risk AI systems by law enforcement and immigration authorities; no clear, loophole-proof risk classification process for AI systems; and no agreement on limiting the exports of prohibited systems outside the EU. She added that there are many other areas where it’s still unclear what lawmakers’ positions will be, such as sought for bans on biometric categorization and emotion recognition.

American facial-recognition company Clearview AI, seemed to come back with an exact hit, linking to pages that revealed the soldier’s name, hometown, and social-media profile. Even when he uploaded grainy photos of dead soldiers, some with their eyes closed or their faces partially burned, the software was often able to identify the person.
