GAO Finds Training Gaps in DHS and DOJ Use of Facial Recognition Services (Homeland Security Today, Sep 26, 2023)
GAO found that all seven agencies initially used these services without requiring staff to take facial recognition training. GAO said six agencies had available data and cumulatively conducted about 60,000 searches when they did not have training requirements in place. Two agencies- HSI and Marshals Service – began to require training.
 

FBI Agents are Using Face Recognition Without Proper Training (WIRED, Sep 25, 2023)
Lawmakers and others concerned about face recognition have said that adequate training on the technology and how to interpret its output is needed to reduce improper use or errors, although some experts say training can lull law enforcement and the public into thinking face recognition is low risk.
 

Data Privacy Law is in Effect in Quebec and Businesses are Confused About What it Means (Biometric Update, Sep 26, 2023)
The additional requirements build on phase one of the law, implemented last year. Since September 22 of 2022, any business that processes the digital identity data of even a single person in Quebec is required to have a designated privacy officer, establish an incident management plan, build a privacy incident log, disclose any incidents to the Commission d’accès à l’information (CAI), and disclose any use of biometric processes to develop databases to the CAI at least 60 days in advance.
 

A Considers Allowing Fingerprint Scan, Facial Analysis to Buy Alcohol, Cannabis (The Center Square, Sep 26, 2023)
The State Liquor and Cannabis Board first took up the issue in June in response to a request from Claire Mitchell, a partner at the law firm Stoel Rives, which represents food and beverage businesses that serve alcohol, to amend five different sections of state law.
