Biometric Surveillance Will Be Debated Until the Final Stages of AI Act (Biometric Update, Sep 22, 2023)
In June, the AI Act reached its final phase after the European Parliament adopted its position on the law after months of heated debates. Some parliamentarians have even pushed to prohibit the use of biometric fingerprints or facial recognition for unlocking devices such as mobile phones. The proposal, however, did not end up in the final version of the Parliament’s position, according to Reuters.

Christian’s research delves into the racial bias in facial recognition technology when identifying individuals of colour, specifically Black women. He said that the root cause of this bias lies in the data used to train AI models. Christian shed light on six cases where Black individuals were wrongly arrested as a result of faulty AI identifications. One prominent case highlighted by Christian involved Porcha Woodruff, an eight-month-pregnant Black woman falsely implicated in a carjacking incident.

When reached for comment, an NYPD spokesperson directed Motherboard to a general policy for facial recognition software, which covers body cameras and security cameras but does not specifically mention a robot. Motherboard asked for clarification and has not received a response.
