There are a few dozen software factories within the Defense Department across the services, including within the Department of the Navy. The Marines have their new Marine Corps Software Factory — which opened its doors this year — and the Navy operates The Forge, a weapons system software factory built on the service’s DevSecOps platform known as Black Pearl. 
 

Tech Lobbyists Don’t Want States to Let You Sue Over Privacy Violations (Bloomberg, Mar 20, 2023)
Virginia’s law leaves enforcement up to the commonwealth’s attorney general, instead of allowing individuals to sue over violations —  something known as “private right of action.” This was one of the most stubborn obstacles last year on a federal privacy bill that received bipartisan support in a committee but failed to advance further amid against determined lobbying. 
 

Amazon Go stores in New York City Didn't Properly Alert Customers They Were Being Biometrically Tracked, Lawsuit Says (CBS News , Mar 20, 2023)
The lawsuit claims that the e-commerce giant violated a New York City law passed in early 2021 which requires businesses that are collecting, storing or sharing "biometric identifier information" to post signage near their entrances alerting customers that they are doing so. 
 

South Africa’s Birth Registration System Challenged Over ‘Unconstitutional’ Requirements (Biometric Update , Mar 20, 2023)
South African human rights organization the Legal Resources Center (LRC) has initiated a legal challenge against the country’s Department of Home Affairs over the what it says are cumbersome requirements for establishing birth certificates for children born in the country. 
 

Why Biometric Voting System May Not Be Possible in Liberia with Just 7 Months to Election (Front Page Africa , Mar 20, 2023)
The implementation of a biometric voting system requires significant investment in equipment, software, and infrastructure. This includes the installation of biometric devices at all polling stations, digitization of the voter registry, and the training of election officials to operate the new technology. Given the limited time available, it may not be feasible to complete these tasks in time for the election.
