Clearview AI Is Closer To Getting A US Patent For Its Facial Recognition Technology (The Verge, Dec 06, 2021)
Clearview AI is on track to receive a US patent for its facial recognition technology, according to a report from Politico. The company was reportedly sent a “notice of allowance” by the US Patent and Trademark Office, which means that once it pays the required administration fees, its patent will be officially approved.

Facebook (Meta) announced with great fanfare a month ago that in December of this year it will stop using facial recognition in the tagging of photos on its social network and that it will erase the records of 1 billion users. However, company sources acknowledged The New York Times that DeepFace, the algorithm that had been trained with the images of all those people, is not going to be eliminated. And that Meta reserves the right to develop new applications in the future based on the processing of biometric data. That is, it is removed from facial recognition, but it is not actually removed from facial recognition.

Scroll through its promotional material and Clearview AI, a plucky New York start-up on a mission to “disrupt crime”, sounds like magic. Got a grainy CCTV image of a bad guy doing a bad thing? Screengrab his face, check it against the more than ten billion images of faces that Clearview has scraped from the open web, and if there is a match, its algorithm will find it in seconds. Mystery bad man might be John Smith, who happened to attend, say, a birthday party that was memorialised in countless Instagram photos, where he is helpfully tagged by friends. Bad guy gets caught. Everybody wins.
 

Facial-biometrics Mismatch Alerts U.S. Officials To ‘impostor’ At South Surrey Border (The Progress, Dec 06, 2021)
U.S. border officials are crediting facial-recognition technology with stopping an impostor from entering their country through the Pacific Highway border in South Surrey. According to a news release issued Friday (Dec. 3), officers using ‘Simplified Arrival’ – a touchless arrival process which compares facial biometrics on documents required for entry into the U.S. – identified a “facial mismatch” while processing a female bus passenger on Nov. 26.
 

Eurostar Biometric Trial Goes Live (Railway Gazette, Dec 06, 2021)
Eurostar has begun live trials of the SmartCheck biometric face authentication system, enabling passengers boarding at London St Pancras International to complete secure ticket verification and UK exit checks on their mobile devices before travel.
 

Senate Body Concerned Over Biometric Issues Faced By Ehsaas, BISP Beneficiaries (Dawn, Dec 06, 2021)
Detailed briefings on the programmes were the top agenda item of the Senate Standing Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, which met with Senator Naseebullah Bazai in the chair. Senior officers from the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division along with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Dr Sania Nishtar briefed the members. The meeting was informed that the objective of these programmes was to address on-ground core issues related to human development.
