Microsoft Kicks Off Its Vision for a Password-Free Future (GIZMODO, Sep 15, 2021)

Entering a password each time you need to access an account can get cumbersome over time, especially if you’ve been working from home in the same pair of sweatpants for the last two years, going through the same routine from morning to night. Isn’t life dragging on enough? I digress. Microsoft envisions a password-free world, which I have to admit is appealing. The company is now letting you access your Microsoft account without typing in a password, though you’ll still need the Microsoft Authenticator app or a Windows Hello fingerprint or face to log in. You can also use an external security key or enable two-factor authentication through SMS or email.

Researchers Use ‘Master Face’ to Bypass Facial Recognition (Fox2Now, Sep 15, 2021)

More and more devices are using facial recognition technology these days and some scientists in Israel say they have discovered a way to bypass a large percentage of them by basically faking your face. The team of computer scientists at Tel Aviv University calls this method the “master face” which uses artificial intelligence technologies to create a facial template. That facial template can consistently fool and unlock identity verification systems.
In their research paper, Scott Schaffer with Blade Technologies says the scientists wrote that the face construct could hypothetically be paired with deepfake technologies. He explained that would allow the image to be “animated’, fooling the “liveliness detection methods” that are designed to assess whether a subject is living or not.

Can NVIDIA Reinvent Voice Technology For Greater Possibilities? (T_HQ Technology & Business, Sep 15, 2021)

In fact, the global conversational AI market is expected to reach US$13.9 billion by 2025. North America is projected to hold the largest market size due to increasing demand for enhanced customer retention initiatives. At the same time, more players are emerging in the industry, especially smaller start-ups that enabling more conversational AI use cases.

Urgent Action Needed Over Artificial Intelligence Risks to Human Rights (UN News, Sep 15, 2021)

Urgent action is needed as it can take time to assess and address the serious risks this technology poses to human rights, warned the High Commissioner: “The higher the risk for human rights, the stricter the legal requirements for the use of AI technology should be”. Ms. Bachelet also called for AI applications that cannot be used in compliance with international human rights law, to be banned. “Artificial intelligence can be a force for good, helping societies overcome some of the great challenges of our times.
