New Threats Fuel Fears of Another Global Cyberattack (The Wall Street Journal, May 17, 2017)
A new fast-spreading computer attack and a hacking group’s threat to release a fresh trove of stolen cyberweapons are fueling fears among businesses and security experts of another global technology assault. The new attack, called Adylkuzz, follows last week’s WannaCry outbreak, which crippled computers in more than 100 countries over the weekend. Both attacks rely on a Windows bug that was patched on March 14 and only affect PCs that haven’t installed the latest version of Microsoft’s software updates.
 

New York May Require Drivers To Submit Phones to 'Textalyzer' (Fortune, May 15, 2017)
They call it a Breathalyzer for texting. Amid a growing epidemic of car accidents caused by distracted drivers, an Israeli company is developing a device that reveals whether drivers were texting at the time of their crashes. New York state is considering a proposal to allow police to use the "textalyzer" to examine the phones of drivers after accidents. But some civil liberties groups worry that the device amounts to an unconstitutional search without a warrant.
 

Milwaukee County Sheriff Clarke says he's accepted DHS job -- but was it offered? (CNN, May 17, 2017)
Controversial Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said Tuesday he has accepted a position within the Trump administration to serve as an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security. One problem: The department won't say the job was offered. Speaking on WISN radio, Clarke said he was "honored and humbled" to receive the appointment to the "office of partnership and programs." The Trump administration, however, won't confirm Clarke's appointment.
 

ICE ERO Immigration Arrests Climb nearly 40% in 100 Days (American Security Today, May 17, 2017)
In the 100 days since President Donald J. Trump signed Executive Orders (EOs) regarding immigration enforcement priorities, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested more than 41,000 individuals who are either known or suspected of being in the country illegally. This reflects an increase of 37.6 percent over the same period in 2016.
 

Google Wants to Be Everywhere With Everyone (The New York Times, May 17, 2017)
On Wednesday Google held its annual conference for developers on a perfect spring day in the outdoor amphitheater adjacent to its Silicon Valley campus. Now in its 11th year, Google I/O — short for input/output — offers a chance for the search and advertising giant to broadcast its ambitions. The event, which lasts three days, is really for the benefit of independent software engineers who work on Google technology. But the two-hour opening keynote is closely watched by the tech media.
 

Alibaba's Revenue Growth Accelerates (The Wall Street Journal, May 18, 2017)
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. said earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter nearly doubled as more shoppers turned to its online platforms for purchases. Net income attributable to ordinary shareholders for the three months ended March 31 was 10.65 billion yuan ($1.55 billion), Alibaba said in a statement ahead of the U.S. market open Thursday. This beat the 6.4 billion yuan ($932 million) forecast by analysts surveyed by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
 

Airport facial recognition: Could it spell the beginning of the end for passports? (ZDNet, May 18, 2017)
Forget boarding passes. In future, our faces could be the only thing needed to board a plane. Finland's national airline Finnair and airport operator Finavia are trialing the use of facial-recognition technology to speed up airport check-ins. "Face recognition is one of the new technologies that, in addition to our trial, are being tested at a few airports. There's an interest in it from the aviation world and elsewhere," Timo Rissanen, head of Helsinki ground experience at Finnair tells ZDNet. "With this trial, we want to test how it suits our [processes] in practice."
 

Liberian Government Launches Issuance of Biometric ID Card (Front Page Africa, May 17, 2017)
Liberia has finally launched the issuance of biometric identification card for its citizens and foreign residents. More than 4.5 million Liberians are expected to register and obtained ID Cards of citizenship or residence individuals in Liberia. The ID Cards will be used as national Identity and individuals bearing the cards can used the cards to open bank accounts and use them is processes such as voter registration.
 

Iris ID technology speeds the security process at Qatar airport (Security Info Watch, May 17, 2017)
Biometric technology from Iris ID is helping passengers at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport to pass through self-service security e-gates in as little as 10 seconds. More than 865,000 passengers used the gates in 2017’s first quarter. The two-step process is available to all Qatar residents free of charge. Passengers place their ID cards or passports on a reader which opens a gate to a second portal. Iris scans or fingerprint readers are used to authenticate identify before opening the last barrier before the boarding gates.
