Hand
The sheer dexterity and sensitivity of our hands help to define us as humans. No other species’ hands have our level of control or expressiveness. The size and shape of hands are unique to individuals. To identify or verify individuals, an imaging device scans the three-dimensional geometry of the hand and fingers, and creates a mathematical picture, which can then be compared against an image stored in a database. Hand geometry readers are relatively large, which makes them primarily suitable for controlling fixed point access. But hand geometry offers a number of important advantages. Capture units are often capable of withstanding extreme workplace conditions, such as temperature and weather that would damage other systems. Many can also verify an individual’s hand even when it is dirty, something a more finely detailed fingerprint reader cannot.
